If you love horses, the equestrian program is designed for you! As Equestrians, campers will participate in daily ground lessons encompassing horse care, riding techniques, and safety precautions. One ground lesson will include a special presentation from the vet and farrier to teach the girls even more about the care of horses. Equestrian campers will receive riding lessons from our experienced staff and take the horses out on trail rides. The program will progress in difficulty throughout the two weeks, enabling campers to learn basic skills that build to more advanced knowledge. The highlight of the two weeks is an overnight trail ride to Scheck’s State Forest Horse Campground where the girls will care for the horses from tacking up to tieing up, and get to spend a night under the stars.
Campers do not need previous experience with horseback riding. Each camper will have lessons scheduled to suit their individual riding abilities and needs.
Equestrian campers must wear a helmet while riding. Camp provides helmets for a $5 rental fee for the whole two weeks. Campers must bring long pants or jeans for riding and riding boots with a 1/4 inch heel. Camp has a supply of riding boots in a variety of sizes that are provided free of cost to riders who don’t bring their own.
Sheck’s State Forest Horse Campground is located on the Boardman River, only a 10 minute drive from camp. The site is a popular stop on the Michigan Shore to Shore trail, and the girls will be able to take the horses down to the river and maybe even go for a quick swim. For more information about the location of the trip, check out the Scheck’s State Forest Horse Campground website.
