Alumni Weekend 2010

Hayo-Went-Ha Alumni Weekend a Huge Success.

Over 80 alumni, staff, campers and friends of camp attended the HWH Alumni Weekend last Saturday and Sunday. The highlight was the banquet in the gloriously restored Old Dining Hall, which was rededicated in honor of David and Laura Sue D’Annunzio in recognition of their very generous donations covering the work. The weather was fabulous, Torch Lake was stunning, the food was outstanding and the camaraderie and spirit were flowing. The 60’s and 70’s were strongly represented with the likes of KP and Dody Rode, Patrick Rode, Chris Rode, Dave Martin, Bob Ulrich, Dan Ulrich, Russ Hicks, Paul Henley, Karl Krecke (all the way from Rochester, MN), Dennis Hansen, Steve McLain, Bob Thurston, Jim Asselin, and Steve Chapin (all the way from Frog River Swamp, NC). Music, stories, memories and good times flowed. The waterfront was buzzing and the Zip Line hummed. All in all, a wonderful time in a grand old building. Many thanks to David and Laura Sue D’Annunzio for their overwhelming generosity and thanks to all that attended. Plan ahead to join us, same time next year.

Next Alumni event.....

Remember to save October 9 and be in Ann Arbor for the 7th Annual UM-MSU HWH Tailgate. This is always a well attended great party. The location is still being negotiated, as renovations to the Big House have encroached on our usual venue, but Bruce Cook and Charley Glerum have promised to let me know as early as possible. Spartans beware, however, that Charley is feeling a little ornery after two straight UM losses and has threatened to put up a no-green zone. Luckily, Tom Barson will be on hand to calm the waters and promote a détente so MSU Alumni Association Advisory Council member Bob Ulrich can approach unscathed. Mark your calendars and join us!

Girls Camp Dining Hall floor completed

The Dining hall at the Girls Camp was "finished" last week with the completion of an epoxy floor coating. This heavy duty flooring adds a special touch of grandeur! The Lodge now has a very manageable and easier to clean surface. It was a great job and that you to all those who made this finishing touch possible.

The camper recruitment season is in full swing. So far the Camp Directors have travelled near and far to spread the word about YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps. The Indian Hills Camp Fair was a huge success and a big HWH thank-you goes out to Dave Brott, Alex Chaney, Rachel Piker, Maggie Deadrick and Ellie Osborn for their help and enthusiasm. The Cincinnati rally was again a huge success with well over 100 people attending. Always a fun crowd to greet in Cincinnati!

Keep telling your friends, neighbors, and relatives about our great camp and we hope we see you at one of our future rallies. Check the section on the web site for dates and locations.

Winter Polar Bear - watch video!

Digging a hole in the ice ready for the Polar Bears!

Watch a video of Dave Martin and see photos of Simon Helyer both jumping into frozen Torch Lake this weekend. With temperatures in the teens and the lake only having just frozen over the night before, several brave souls from the Oxford Adventure Club along with Dave and Simon braved the icy waters of Torch Lake. First Doug Gillespie the Maintenance director had to chip a hole in the ice for the Polar Bears to make a splash. Then one after the other they jumped – spending a freezing and shivering 4 seconds in the frigid waters. That deserves a Polar Bear certificate itself!

With bug juice, a silver moon hanging and forty people happily singing “Zombie Jamboree” the Camp Arbutus Reunion at the Grosse Pointe Country Club was a huge success! It was so enjoyable to see and hear alumni reminisce about their time at camp. Many had photos and memorabilia from their camp days to share and everyone remembered their favorite songs and were happy to sing loud and clear with friends! A 2009 camp reunion is being planned at camp. Check the web site for details early in the new year!
